An original Mid-Century Modern work on paper by the celebrated École de Nice expressionist Sylvain Vigny

Sylvain Vigny (French-Austrian, 1903–1970)
A Coastal Composition with Figures and Sailboat
Description
An original Mid-Century Modern work on paper by the celebrated École de Nice expressionist Sylvain Vigny. Executed in a fluid blend of watercolor, gouache, and delicate ink work, this piece beautifully embodies the artist’s signature chaotic, deeply expressive style.
The composition depicts a breezy maritime scene, utilizing rapid, gestural washes of cobalt blue, smoky gray, and earthy brown tones to evoke a coastal shore or lakeside harbor. In the lower-left foreground, two heavily abstracted, silhouetted figures stand on the bank, observing a solitary sailboat drifting on the shimmering water.
Vigny’s mastery of Lyric Abstraction is on full display here; the energetic brushwork and intentional bleeding of colors prioritize atmospheric mood and movement over rigid form. The artwork measures a classic 14 x 12 inches sight size and is housed in an impressive 20 x 19 inch frame, commanding a powerful wall presence and standing as a quintessential representation of post-war European modernism.
About the Artist
Born in Vienna, Sylvain Vigny migrated to Paris in 1929 before settling permanently in Nice, France, in 1934. He quickly established himself as a prominent and fiercely independent voice within the French avant-garde, famously championed by French Resistance icon and gallerist Jean Moulin. Known for his raw, emotionally charged landscapes and beach scenes of the Côte d’Azur, Vigny’s works are held in numerous private European collections and feature regularly in prestigious international auctions.
