Original Japanese woodblock print by Kobayashi Kiyochika (1947-1915)
Kiyochika Kobayashi was born at Honjo, Edo (now Tokyo) in 1947 as a son of the lower class of the Samurai family. Kiyochika has been described as “the last important ukiyo-e master and the first noteworthy print artist of modern Japan.” He is said to be the last ukiyo-e artist to lyrically depict Tokyo during the Meiji cultural enlightenment. Kiyochika, while best-known today as a print designer, was also an illustrator and cartoonist. https://pages.uoregon.edu/jsmacollections/home/artists/kiyochika-kobayashi-1847-1915-.html
