Artist: Description: Billy Price Carroll (American/Tennessee, 1920-2011), At the age of 45, Carroll, travelled to Hong Kong where she was commissioned to paint a portrait of a local oil tycoon. In Hong Kong she studies Chinese ink painting under local masters. She became so accomplished in the medium that, in 1969, she was invited to exhibit sixty-two paintings at the National Taiwan Arts Hall under the auspices of the Taiwan Historical Museum in Taipei. According to the April 1969 edition of Beautiful China: A Pictorial Monthly, “her Taipei exhibition of new, bolder styles in calligraphy, bamboo and seascape was so impressive that a celebrated artist, China’s own First Lady, Madame Chiang, viewed the American artist’s paintings.” The Sunday, February 2, 1969 edition of The China News.
